What is Science?

The somewhat ambiguous notion of what constitutes "science" is discussed. However, the idea that science is a way of knowing or a method of understanding phenomena seems to be common to most definitions of science. The modern dogma of the "scientific method" as the only proper way of conducting scientific inquiry is presented. Dr. Freeman offers a version of the scientific method that seems to work for some investigators.

Students are also introduced to hypothesis testing and the philosophy that science does not demonstrate a hypothesis as absolute truth, but a hypothesis may be evaluated by experimentation and the resulting data will either "rejected" or "fail to reject" a hypothesis. In other words, science deals with the probability that a hypothesis is the best explanation of a natural phenomena based on the available data.
